My dad and I are training for the Atlantic City Marathon, which is on October 21.
Because of all the craziness with the wedding, I didn’t get to follow a typical 15-16 week training program. Being that this is the 5th marathon we are training for (it will be the 5th for both of us) I think it is okay that we don’t follow a formal 16- week program because we already have a decent base. After going through my numerous running books and training plans, I decided to follow Pete Pfitzinger’s Advanced Marathoning 12 Week Program. He offers 3 mileage levels for this program: 35-55 miles per week, 55-70 miles per week, and 70-85 miles per week. I have chosen to follow the 55-70 mileage program, and will be taking my dad along for the ride : )
First 4 weeks of the program:
Week 1 : 7/30 – 8/4
Sunday: REST (took the red-eye in from Hawaii = slept all day!)
Monday: 5 @ 8:33
Tuesday: 8 miles w/ 10 x 200 meter sprints. 8:27 overall pace + FIT Class (gym)
Wednesday: 11 miles @ 9:04
Thursday: 5 @ 9:03
Friday: 6 @ 8:51
Saturday: 15 @ 9:10
Total: 50 miles
I feel pretty good after this first week of training and am looking forward to increasing my mileage. I do know that once I go back to work in September it will be hard to maintain 70 mile weeks but I will do what I can.
Did anyone watch the women’s olympic marathon? I have it DVR-ed and am avoiding all spoilers!

50 miles is awesome. I ran 40 miles this week and I am beat! Have fun with your training with Dad. I love the way you two run together! It warms my heart.
Wow 50 miles a week. I am so envious of people that can run that much! I think the highest mileage I have ever had is 20 miles a week. One day I will get there!
Of course I watched. Live! In London. Would not miss it:)
Missed you
It was a great race watch and enjoy.
I watched parts of the Woman’s Marathon. Hope you enjoy it! Great mileage and good luck in that marathon. What a fantastic place to run (Atlantic City). I’d run then play the slots all night long! (Slots are the only gambling I somewhat understand LOL).
I am glad you are back to blogging. Congrats on the wedding! So so happy for you. I think this plan sounds great and am excited to follow your training.
You have such a great base of endurance and 5 races under your belt… you’ll have no problem having a shorter training cycle!!
