Sorry about the picture spacing. I have been blogging in wordpress and I need to find a better blogging program for Mac. Windows live writer is the one thing I miss about my old laptop. I did some research and found that it is possible to use windows live on a mac, you just have to buy the license and I’m not sure how much that costs. Mac-owners, what blogging program do you use? If you are interested I found this article on the 10 best blogger mac apps. I don’t know which one to use!

I am off from work today for the Jewish holiday, so my dad and I are going to attempt a 20+ mile run. The weather is not the greatest today- its a bit humid, but next weekend we are racing 18 miles and want to have enough time in between to recover from the long run.

*What is the longest training run you have ever completed?
When we were training for Philly (my first marathon) we did a 23 mile training run.

*Pinterest? Love it or indifferent?

Race Report

My dad and I have run this race 4 years in a row.

My Previous Results:
*2008~ 1:47:05 (my first half marathon)
*2009~ 1:38:10
*2010~ 1:33:41
*2011~ 1:34:56

As I said yesterday, I didn’t have high hopes for this race. I had only gotten about 4 1/2 hours of sleep the night before and have been fighting a bit of a cold since Monday. I wanted to run it mainly for the points I would receive in the race series I compete in and to sweat out some toxins :)

Getting to the race from Brooklyn went smoothly. I stayed in a hotel the previous night since we were at the wedding. As I was getting ready for bed, it felt like a marathon weekend- staying in a hotel, setting my alarm for an hour that was way too early- it actually felt natural. For the amount of sleep I got, I actually slept pretty well. I stuck to wine and champagne at the wedding and was sure to eat plenty of carbs :)

The next morning was pretty humid, for some reason, this race is not known for having great running weather but I was just happy it wasn’t raining. My dad and I warmed up a bit, but less than we usually do. The start was smooth and uneventful…we started pretty close to the front and it wasn’t very crowded. (About 3,000 people ran the race.)

I knew I wanted to keep my pace in between 7-7:30, depending on how I was feeling. Because of all the buildings nearby, the garmin pace isn’t always accurate in this race, so I was careful not to depend on it too much. The above splits say I went out a little fast, but according to the mile clocks on the course, I hit the first 3 miles at 7 minutes exactly. From there I began to slow down, but was able to stay in my desired pace range.

I felt okay, definitely not great, and there were a few times that I had to remind myself that it was okay that I wasn’t running closer to a 7 min pace. I ate two gels during the race- right before miles 4 and 8, and they definitely helped. The course is a beautiful route, through liberty state park and along the water, with views of the New York City skyline for the majority of the race.

Dad’s Results

My dad did well, but not as well as he wanted to, finishing in 1:47:34, which is an 8:13 pace. He doesn’t perform as well in the heat and humidity but it was a great training run for New York.

Weekend Success.

by blueeyedrunner on September 25, 2011

Hello Friends and Happy Fall!

This weekend has been a busy one. Last night, we went a wedding in the city. It was a fantastic wedding at an actual television studio stage in Brooklyn. There was a red carpet and everything.

The cocktail hour overlooked Manhattan.

Beautiful View

We had to get a pic, naturally.

Dan’s College  Friends

Dan has the largest group of college friends I have ever seen. And, unfortunately, we have to invite them all to the wedding. Not that I don’t love them, because I do…(really!) Its just lots of boys and dates. They literally take up 2 or more tables at every wedding we go to.

We had a blast at the wedding, but it was a late night and I had to rest up for my half marathon. I woke up early this morning, just a few minutes after 6, quickly got ready and waited in the lobby of the hotel for my dad to pick me up. It took us just a few minutes to get back to New Jersey and into race mode.

I did  not expect much out of this race, as I am just getting over this nasty cold. I expected  my cold combined with last night’s lack of sleep to be an interesting combination for racing conditions but I did better than I had expected!

Full race report to follow tomorrow but my official results were 1:34:56, with an average pace of 7:14. Not my best showing, but certainly not my worst!

See you tomorrow with a full race report!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
xoxo

Thursday Musings

by blueeyedrunner on September 22, 2011

Good thoughts are no better than good dreams, unless they be executed.

~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Last night I had back to school night. It was my first back to school night in 5 years that not a single parent showed up. Seriously. I work in somewhat of a unique situation but having no parents come was highly unusual. The good news is that because of back to school night, Dan cooked dinner :)

I’m starting to feel a little better. I wanted to run before back to school night but figured it was better to rest up for the half marathon this weekend. I’m definitely going to need it since Dan and I have a wedding  to go to the night before. Saturday night we will be at the wedding in Brooklyn and then my dad is going to pick me up earlyyyy Sunday morning to drive us to the race in Jersey. I offered to take the subway be he insisted.

He’s seriously the best.

Now if I can just kick this cold. I want to run but I think its more important to recover fully for the half marathon on Sunday.

In other news, after months of searching, I finally found my dream wedding photographer. She is in business for herself, her prices are affordable, and her her pictures are beautiful. After I sign the contract and make everything official I will link to her.

Today is the last official day of summer, although it doesn’t feel like summer in New Jersey- its foggy and wet today.

Thought for the day:

Off to tutor, then rest!

*What was your workout for the day?
Still resting…trying to shake this cold!

How Do You Take Your Coffee?

by blueeyedrunner on September 20, 2011

What I’ve learned from running is that the time to push hard is when you’re hurting like crazy and you want to give up. Success is often just around the corner.

~Sir James Dyson, Inventor of the Dyson vacuum cleaner

Good Morning!

Love this quote today. Thank you for all your nice comments on the 20-miler! I usually dread the first 20, but ultimately end up enjoying it and looking forward to the next one!

Unfortunately, just two weeks into the new school year and I already have my first full-blown cold. Its unavoidable- the germs are everywhere! I went to bed early last night and am trying to rest up for the half marathon this weekend. (And back-to-school night tomorrow!) I’m sorry I am not caught up on all of your blogs…this cold has me in bed early, but I promise to catch up soon!

Yesterday, my dad and I completed a 3-mile recovery run and then hit Starbucks for my first pumpkin spice latte of the season. (Dad’s more a fan of the egg nog lattes around the holidays, but he tried my PSL and was impressed.) I love pumpkin spice lattes but have to order them in a very specific way- skim milk, 2 pumps (for a grande), w/ whipped. Normally, if you ask for skim milk and less syrup, they automatically assume you don’t want the whipped cream.

*Starbucks? Yay or Nay? What is your favorite Starbucks beverage??
