New York City Marathon Training

by blueeyedrunner on July 31, 2011

Training is principally an act of faith. The athlete must believe in its efficacy; he must believe that through training he will become fitter and stronger; that by constant repetition of the same movements he will become more skillful and his muscles more relaxed.

~Franz Stampfl, On Running

This is the place where I will keep all my NYC Marathon training posts. It will be kept under the training page and it will be updated as I continue to train.

I am training for the marathon in New Balance 890s.

My favorite marathon, without a doubt, was my first marathon, Philadelphia. Second favorite would be Steamtown where I qualified for Boston and my least favorite marathon to date was Boston. We will see where NYC ranks!

Underwear Run?!

by blueeyedrunner on July 31, 2011

The runner’s greatest asset, apart from essential fitness of body, is a cool and calculating brain allied to confidence and courage.

~Fraz Stampfl

Speaking of runner’s assets- would you run a race  in nothing but your undies?? Apparently plenty of people would! This race, held this year on August 5 in Central Park, but run annually the night before the NYC triathlon is SOLD OUT.

Yesterday, my hamstrings were sore and my legs were tired. I complete a slow 5-miler to bring my total mileage to 42 for the week, just a little bit more than last week. I am taking a rest day from running today and plan to do 17 tomorrow with my dad to kick of week 3 of NYC marathon training.

Week 1: 41 miles
Week 2: 42 miles

Not bad, especially since my mileage when not in training is considerably lower.

Thank you for your opinions and suggestions on the bridesmaids dresses and cell phone issue! Keep them pouring in :) I am still working on the blog roll. I will post it when it is completed.

My New Balance shoes came in the mail on Friday (to my parents house). I still have not seen them in person yet, but I had my mom take a picture so I could see what they look like.

So excited to try them out! I love the purple!

Somethings Are Just Meant To Be…

by blueeyedrunner on July 29, 2011

Never give up on something you can’t go a day without thinking about.

Hello and Happy Friday!

Thanks for your opinions and advice on the bridesmaids dress issue. I am going with one or two of my girls to see the dress in person next week. We will see how it looks then. Personally, I love the pale pink and pale green and also the aquamarine sort of green. However, I think the shades of purple would be most flattering on all of my girls. We will see!

*NYC Marathon Training Update*

Today my dad was off from work, so after waking up at 4:30am and teaching 2 bootcamps, I ate breakfast then met my dad for a 6 mile run. It was super sticky and humid, but not as hot as it has been. We ran at an 8:25 pace. My legs were shot from teaching this morning and late yesterday afternoon. Not even sore…just tired.

Week 1: 41 miles
Week 2: 37 miles (so far- still have tomorrow’s run to do!)
Shooting for about 45 miles total for the week. I know this is not at all what my training plan calls for, but I don’t want to increase my mileage too quickly.

Here’s what week 2 looked like so far:

Sunday: 14 Long
Monday:
REST
Tuesday:
6 miles + 2 bootcamps
Wednesday:
Mile Repeats
Thursday
: 5.6 miles + 3 bootcamps
Friday: 6.2 miles + 2 bootcamps

I am in the process of creating an NYC Marathon Training post that will be kept on the Training page. I usually wait until the marathon is over to compile my posts which makes it a HUGE project. I figure if I do it as I train, it will be easier. So if you see a post from me with only 2 links on it- that is why.

Was it Meant to Be?

Remember the other day when I said I had to decline an offer to teach bootcamp for a local studio due to contractual issues?? Well, the owner would NOT take no for an answer. I seriously turned down his offer 3 times and he just refused to accept my answer. We ended up working things out and that is why you see so many bootcamps on my training schedule.

And just a side note- I’ve said it before, but I don’t actually do the entire bootcamp with each class. I spend a lot of time instructing but I do demonstrate the exercises and do some of it with the class to get people going.

Enjoy your weekend!

*What are your plans? Tell me about your workouts! Any races scheduled?
I have to tutor this afternoon and then we are heading to the shore tonight! The long run this week is 17 miles which my dad and I are planning to do on Monday since he is on vacation for the next two weeks.

*I am in the process of updating my blog roll. It will likely be on its own page, broken down into categories: Running, Fitness, Food, Wedding, etc. If you are reading and interested in being included- leave a comment. It doesn’t have to be about the blog roll but if you comment I will check out your blog :)

The Bridal Party

by blueeyedrunner on July 29, 2011

We immediately become more effective when we decide to change ourselves rather than asking things to change for us.

~Unknown

My dear readers, even though you were not very helpful on the cell phone issue-

I think I got equal votes for blackberry, iphone, and many for the droid :)

I need your help with another issue.

The Dreaded Bridesmaids Dress.

I know. I know. First of all, if you are not at all into the wedding stuff…feel free to skip this post. And gentlemen- I am warning you…there is lots of pink and pastel ahead. I have found a dress I love online. Its not definite yet, but I love the way it looks, the flowing fabric and the delicate flowers. It is the perfect gown for the feel I am trying to create.

Here she is, in all her glory.

by Val Stefani

The problem is…I can’t decide on a color…

Here’s the thing. I want to do something different. I’m not crazy about matchy-matchy bridesmaids and I know one dress in one color won’t look good on everybody. The problem is- I refuse to do black, brown or navy. I want color. So I have 2 ideas: one color, different style dresses OR same dress in more than one color. This particular dress doesn’t come in any other styles so if I do go with this one, I’ll only have color to play with.

Some color schemes I love:

Pink and Green

Shades of Purple

My favorite color, green <3

Pastel

The other thing is, I am looking at about 6 bridesmaids plus a junior bridesmaid. I definitely do not want to do 6 or 7 different colors, but I’m also not sure how to break them up.

*What do you think? Do you hate it? Its okay with you do, I want to know. Any suggestions? Have you seen other brides play with color or know of any links I can check out? Any and all help is welcome :)

*If you are married- what did your bridal party wear?

PS- Its not that I don’t like brown, black or navy…I just really want color for my bridal party :) I think these colors are very classy, just not the feel I am going for…

See you this afternoon :)

Carb Crazy and New Balance Update!

by blueeyedrunner on July 28, 2011

Pressure is nothing more than the shadow of great opportunity.

~Michael Johnson

It happens every time without fail. Whenever I begin to increase my mileage, my body goes carb-crazy!!! For months now, I have been doing so well eating healthy, nutritious meals full of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins with very little refined or processed foods. This meant a serious elimination of carbs, many starches, sweets, wine, etc. During the weeks when my mileage was low, pre-NYC marathon training, my body adapted to this way of eating very quickly. My energy levels were up and I was actually craving the vegetables. Now that marathon training is in full swing, I have been craving the carbs again- and not the good kind! Pretzels, chips, pizza…ugh! I am a firm believer in giving your body what it needs and sometimes cravings are your body’s way of telling you what it needs; however- I have been giving in too much and eating the wrong kinds of carbs. I want to fuel my body with nutritious carbs, not processed and refined ones.

This week I am focusing on replacing the processed carbs with healthy ones: lots of apples, bananas, carrots, green vegetables, whole wheat, etc. I even started eating oatmeal again, despite the heat- its what my body was asking for.

Speaking of marathon training…thank you for your speed work recommendations! I can’t wait to try some of these workouts!

Here are a few of your suggestions:

*Track Workouts*
I will also link to these on the workouts pace!

*1600,1200,1000,800,600,400,200 w/ 200m RI.
*800 meter repeats w/ 60 sec rest
*10 x 1000 w/ 200 meter RI (um, this one sounds crazy…even for me…thanks anyway coach!)
*5-6 x 1 mile @ 10k pace (thanks Monika! def want to try this one soon!)
*1200, 1000, 800, 600, 800, 1000, 1200
*20 x 200
*12 x 300
*400, 800,1200, 1600, 1600,1200, 800, 400

New Balance Update!

Last night I had a conference call with Active, New Balance and the 14 other team members that will be sporting New Balance shoes throughout New York City Marathon training! The shoes and other goodies should be arriving any day now and I can’t wait to begin training in them! I will be sure to show them to you as soon as they arrive. It is definitely time for new shoes…My engagement pair have seen better days :)

Today I need to get to the verizon store. I have been known to bash verizon from time to tie but in this case, I think blackberry is to blame. My blackberry bold has touched my last nerve. It freezes up all the time and constantly is re-registering on the blackberry network. It is constantly working so the battery dies all the time. I think pretty soon its time to switch over to team iphone.

Catch you later with a wedding post! Its time to decide on bridesmaids dresses…Don’t forget to check out my guest post :)

*Crack-berry, iphone or other??
I have always been a blackberry person- I love the email and not sure how I would like a touch screen all the time, but I am done with this blackberry bold.

*Do your eating habits change according to your training?
