“Racing” Again

by blueeyedrunner on April 30, 2011

I like to say, and I truly believe, that every run brings new experiences. You just don’t know what they might be until you actually do the run. That’s one of my major reasons for pushing out the front door as often as I do—the adventure of it all.

~Amby Burfoot

Good Morning and Happy Weekend!

When my alarm started blaring at 6am this morning I rolled over, confused about why. Is it Friday? Again? It took me a minute and then I realized…

Then I realized I forgot to mention this yesterday to you all…

I am racing today!

Well, not truly racing, just running another race. Another 15K to be exact. My muscles are still sore from FIT class on Thursday, and of course, I am still recovering from Boston so this race most certainly will not be pretty, but hopefully it will be fun.

I will be sure to report back later.

The above quote is from Amby Burfoot, editor of Runners’ World Mag and Winner of the 1968 Boston Marathon.

My dad and I had the pleasure of meeting Amby when we were in Boston. He was in town for the race and a book signing. Unfortunately, we already have Amby’s book, The Runner’s Guide to the Meaning of Life, (It is a fantastic book if you have not read it. So inspirational!) but of course we did not have the book with us so we bought a copy of The Boston Marathon and had Amby sign that. He even flipped through and found his picture in the book to sign!

I’m off to “race”. See you later!

*My google reader has been funny these past few days. It will say certain blogs have no new posts for days and then I will sign in and have hundreds of unread posts and those blogs which I thought have not been updated suddenly have 10-12 new posts all at once. Soooo if I have not been to your blog recently, you know why!

Crazy Readers and Mac vs. PC

by blueeyedrunner on April 29, 2011

Thank you for entering my giveaway! To enter the giveaway, I asked readers to tell me about their craziest athletic adventure in honor of the book’s author, Marshall Ulrich, who ran across the United States.

I absolutely loved reading about your crazy adventures!

*Running through blizzards
*Running through intense heat
*Training for marathons
*Racing a new distance- this one is always scary. Whether its a 5k or a marathon!
*Running up a canyon into a foot of snow.
*Running through the everglades at night. Alligators = so scary!
*Racing an uphill half marathon. Check out Page’s Race Report and read her mom’s comments…hysterical!
*Backflips on a 4-in beam! Kelly, this one could be the scariest of them all for me!
*Running 10-miles to high school!
*Sprint Triathlons
*Hood to Coast
*Tough Mudder
*The Mt. Taylor Quadrathalon:

I think one of the craziest things I have done twice is the Mt. Taylor Quadratholon. It’s in Grants, New Mexico. You start out by biking 13 miles up to Mt. Taylor then run 5 miles, then cross-country ski 2 miles then snow show 1 mile to the top then do it all again in reverse!! It’s super fun but crazy!!

Thank you for sharing all of your crazy endeavors with me! They are all very inspiring and you are ALL more adventurous than I am!

I am enjoying my new Mac, but have had a few questions so I thought I would address them here.

If you are still catching up, the hard drive on my lap top recently crashed. Fortunately, most of my things were backed up on an external hard drive, and even more exciting, my dad actually restored my old computer so I got everything back that I wanted.

I have always used PCs in the past, but I have been interested in getting a Mac for awhile now. I ended up going with the 13-inch Mac Book Pro.

What I Love About My Mac Book
*Photo Editing Capabilities
*Garageband- I hope to start teaching group fitness soon and am excited to use garage band to edit the speed of the music, etc.
*How easy it is to use.
*The apple support team.
*Website design/creative capabilities.
*Less viruses to worry about.

Things My PC Did Better
*Blogging. Windows Live Writer is much better than Ecto.
*Word Processing

I am still learning and I’m sure I will find out much more about my new computer but those are the things that stand out to me. I am also still getting used to not having a Right Click Button.

*I have asked this question before but are you a Mac or PC user?

*Do you use Windows Live Writer or Ecto? Or do you just use blogger, wordpress, etc.?
The cool thing about the blogging programs is you can drop pictures into the document, you don’t have to upload them. Makes things much easier, especially in picture heavy posts.

*You still have time to enter my giveaway!
I will announce the winner on Monday.

Have a great Friday!

Running on Empty Book Review and Giveaway!

by blueeyedrunner on April 28, 2011

By now you have probably read a few book reviews on Marshall Ulrich’s new book, Running on Empty about his record setting run across America. You may have even tried to win a copy. Good news: I am also giving away a copy of this book, but not before I let you know what I think about it!

DSC01329.jpg

Of course I was thrilled to receive this book to review. A free book? About running? Sign me up! I’ll admit, I was a little concerned about the comparisons made between Running on Empty and Born to Run. As I have admitted before, I could not exactly get through Born to Run.

I do not think Running on Empty is anything like Born to Run.

I loved it.

I don’t exactly understand ultra-runners. You know, the type that run for 24 hours straight or run races like Badwater, Leadville, Pike’s Peak, etc.

Kinda like Marshall. As I began the book, I thought that he sounded like a pretty normal guy. You can see yourself having a conversation with him about running or heading our for a jog with him like he’s a member of your local running club.

Only he does these ridiculously crazy things!

For example:
*Pikes Peak Quad (yes quad = 4 times!)
*Leadville Trail 100 and the Pikes Peak Marathon in one weekend.
*Badwater Quad
*Run across Colorado
*Climb Everest

Just to name a few.

So, Why?

What confuses me most is why would someone ever want to do those things?? What makes him say, “Today I am going to run across Colorado.” My favorite parts of the book are not when he describes his journey from San Francisco to New York, or how he did it, but rather when he discusses why he did the crazy things he did. What made the suffering worth it.

“Why do we go the distance? Is it a cult? An addiction? Some kind of penance? Do we have something to prove? What do we get out of it? The answers to these questions are nearly as individual as the runners themselves. Charlie Engle, for example, would say yes, it’s like an addiction- he traded cocaine and alcohol for competition. Ray Zahab would tell you that he started running for his health, dropped a pack-a-day smoking habit, and then got hooked by the personal discovery that comes from covering long distances in exotic lands, and finding opportunities to connect with and contribute to people from different cultures. As for me, sure, there’s an underlying compulsion: survivor’s guilt and a need to punish myself, to prove myself, to face down my own mortality to defy death. But my running is also a reflection of my upbringing, a work ethic, a personal challenge. My love of history gets interwoven too- the feats of other people in other times- coupled with the alluring possibility that I might be able to go farther faster, today (44).”

“I pushed through the pain by reminding myself that I wasn’t doing it only for me. My suffering had a purpose. Anyone who’s walked or run a few miles to benefit a cause knows how motivating this can be. Just when you start to feel as if you have nothing left to give, you remember how difficult someone else’s life is, and you can keep going. Perspective does wonders (24).”

I also enjoyed how he brought attention to the mystery of the allure running. For example in the quote above, someone may run to replace an addiction and someone else for their health. You may run because you enjoy it or you may run to punish yourself.

“It’s a compelling dichotomy: Running takes discipline and focus. What makes it tolerable, though, is letting the mind drift, checking out “real life,” where the legs keep moving as the world keeps turning, but the mind focuses elsewhere and notices, for example, the beauty of a bristlecone pine, bent and twisted by the wind (146).

Marshall is insightful, passionate, and real. I like to read books in which you get to know the author and find out why and how he fell in love with running and this book does not disappoint.

What I Learned
*Everyone has a unique reason for running.
*Pain is relative.
*Toenails are not necessary.
*Age is just a number.
*Anything is possible.

Final Message from Marshall:

“Being a runner doesn’t make you a sage. It can give you a personal philosophy, test you and take your measure, and even save your life. But it doesn’t make you a good person, or even a nice person. It doesn’t guarantee a great marriage or success in business. Those achievements spring from your own character and your own experiences (242)”

What I’m Loving Wednesday…

by blueeyedrunner on April 27, 2011

*80 degree temps in New Jersey.

*My strong return to the gym.
So far this week: spin & Pilates. The running is coming along more slowly but I am trying again this afternoon. Pilates completely stretched out my calves and achilles yesterday, so hopefully that helps!

*Loving that we are halfway to the weekend!

*My new mac.

*Eating Easter leftovers all week long

*My adorable babies:

*Spring Flowers

*The fact that my smoker sister went to the gym for a double session yesterday: yoga in the AM and a personal training sesh in the PM. I WILL make her a health and fitness fanatic.

I am attempting a 6-mile run this afternoon! I hope it goes better than the last one did…

“Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.”
- Mother Teresa

*What are you loving this Wednesday?

Back At It!

by blueeyedrunner on April 26, 2011

Sweat once a day to regenerate your skin.

Day 1 back at work was a success! Now I just have to make it through the rest of the week. I woke up much more tired today than yesterday. I always find it so funny that I can get up at 4:45 ready to go to spin without a problem and then when I “sleep in” until 6am I have to drag myself out of bed. That is the power of exercise people!

Speaking of exercise, my mom and I are very excited because my sister joined our beloved gym yesterday! Along with being able to workout together, she used me as her referral and now I have $50 to apply towards my (somewhat expensive) Pilates sessions!

I am so excited to go back to Pilates today! I missed last week because of the marathon and the week before because I was so sick and I am excited to get back to the routine today!

Recovery Week Workouts
Sunday: REST
Monday: Marathon Day!
Tuesday: REST
Wednesday: REST
Thursday: Upper-Body
Friday: Upper-Body
Saturday: Spin & Back

Sunday: 5-mile recovery run
Monday: Spin

I am hoping that having my sister join us at the gym will inspire us to attempt some new classes. Christine is really excited to try some of the various yoga classes our gym offers. Sometimes attempting a new form of yoga scares me so it will be great to have the support!

Last night, I was tired from waking up so early so I rested on the couch, read my book, watched Gossip Girl and called it a night.

*Check out this article from SELF Magazine on the benefits of water!

*What are you reading right now??

*Check back for a great running book review and giveaway later in the week!
